So how do I know if my service provider is a professional career counselor?

The California Career Development Association (the largest state organization of practicing professional career counselors) gives you these guidelines to help you determine if you are working with a professional career counselor.

Does your service provider have the following:

	Master's Degree in Counseling or closely related area
	National Board for Certified Counselors Exam
	At least 2 Years Supervised Experience
	National Certified Career Counselor and/or California Registered Professional Counselor/Career Counselor

Also be sure that your career counselor does not charge large lump sum fees in advance or promise the world in 2-3 sessions. Career counselors, like therapists, should charge a per session fee which usually ranges from $75 - $150/session.

When seeking a professional career counselor that you would like to work with, make sure it is the right fit for you. You may want to ask your prospective provider some of the following questions:

	What’s your training?
	What’s your counseling style?
	What kinds of clients do you work with?
	What are your fees?
	How long will the process take?

The more comfortable you feel with your career counselor, the better your experience will be. It’s your session, make it worth your while!
